Here's how it actually happens

Say you sell sneakers called Cloud Nine. People know the name. It's yours.

Somewhere else, a stranger decides to sell sneakers called Kloud Nyne. They fill in a government form asking to legally own that name.

The government doesn't just say yes. First they put it on a public list — every new name someone has asked to own that week. About ten thousand names, every Tuesday.

Then they wait 30 days. In those 30 days, anyone can say: "Hang on. That's too close to my name. Don't give it to them." And the government listens.

After 30 days, it's theirs. Now there are sneakers called Kloud Nyne. Your customers get confused. And in some cases they can come after you and say you're the one who has to stop.

Nobody phones you. Nobody emails you. You're simply expected to read that list of ten thousand names yourself. Every week. Forever.

Almost nobody does.

So we read it for you

Every week we go through all ten thousand names and look for anything close to yours. Then you get one email:

"This name just showed up. It's close to yours. You have 25 days left to object."

Or, most weeks: "We read 10,693 names. Nothing looked like yours."

Spelling doesn't matter. Sound does.

Copycats rarely copy your spelling — that would be too obvious. They copy how your name sounds. Every pair below is spelled differently and sounds the same:

XEROX  /  ZEROXsame sound
COCA COLA  /  KOKA KOLAsame sound
NIKE  /  NYKEsame sound
PHOTO  /  FOTOsame sound

A tool that just compares letters misses all four. We compare how a name is said out loud — and whether they sell the same kind of thing you do.
